Maddie woke up yesterday terrified to get out of her bed because she thought there were clowns hiding in her window blinds that would get her. I carried her around to show her there was nothing hiding and she seemed ok. A little while later we were getting ready to leave for a play date and I told her to get her shoes on. She wouldn't budge from the couch. Again, she said the clowns were going to come out from the blinds and get her. I shared a verse from the Bible with her that helped me earlier in the day, to call on the name of the Lord and be safe. She didn't seem convinced. So I told her if she is ever scared she can just say, "Jesus, protect me!" and He will keep her safe.

She yelled, "Jesus, protect me!" and jumped down, ran to grab her shoes, and sprinted back to the couch, ultimately covering her eyes with her hands and asking if the clowns came out.

Last night, Justin took Maddie around our home and along with Maddie rebuked the clowns and commanded them to leave and said only God would remain with us.

It's all sort of amusing and sad at the same time. She has such a tender heart and I love that about her. However, she is afraid of so much. How do I truly speak God's security and safety into her?

The next clown I see at a carnival or anywhere, I'm gonna murder it. I'm serious.

Hi Stacey

Nice to "meet" you.

Thank you for your comment on my blog regarding my son's health situation.

Crohn's was actually mentioned to me by our doctor. She said, "we could be dealing with Lupis, Crohn's, Colitis.... I just won't know until we can get the tests done."

Things are a little crazy here tonight, but once I get the chance, I'll google the author's name and see what I can come up with.

I also am looking forward to checking out your blog and reading your posts. Sorry about the clown thing. Why do those clowns frighten children so much..... I remember being terrified of the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz. That was back before VCRs and we only watched the show once a year on tv, but MAN OH MAN did that witch scare me!

Tell Justin that when he gets rid of the next clown he sees, he can take down a witch too. hahaha.

Looking forward to "chatting" again soon.

hahahahaa,
Just read the "sippy cup" post. I'm sure it wasn't funny when it happened, but I got a chuckle out of it.

I once threw a pitcher of juice at Jon. (It was a plastic pitcher, so there was no glass-shattering! Lucky for HIM!) It only had about half of an inch of juice in it, but it was enough to stain my patio door blinds. Stupid me.

Oh yah, and I once threw the cordless phone at him.

That's only two items; not TOO bad for 20 years of marriage, eh? haha

Also, loved your brother & sister-in-law's video. Very cute couple. Are they that happy ALL the time? Does SHE throw things? (Give her time...) :O)

That's a tough question. Children are wonderful and trusting little creatures. We want them to have great imaginations and we want their childhoods' to be magical too. But at the same time we want their understanding of God to be realistic. We cannot make him out to be Santa Claus, or like Santa he will wear out his usefulness.

My son has an attention problem that has not technically been diagnosed as ADHD, but we are pretty certain it is. He wants so badly to do well in school, but he simply cannot focus on anything. His heart wants to do well, but his brain sees a picture of a the moon and suddenly he is on a mission to other worlds.

I love this about him because it is a little piece of me. I want him to be able to instantly slip into a creative day dream. But I also want him to do well in school.

The other day he asked my wife why God didn't answer his prayers to fix his brain so he could do well in school. It was a remarkable question to hear from a 6 year old. I cannot tell him just to pray about it and it will get better. I'm not certain it will. I have to remind him that God makes us all different for a reason. And sometimes we have to accept that we are not the people we are comparing ourselves to. And then of course there is the fine line of when do we need God's help and when do we need medicine? Can medicine be God's help?

So what do you do about a child who is afraid of clowns hiding behind the blinds?

That's tough. You do not want to make the child feel silly for thinking there are clowns in the house. First of all, clowns are terrifying. Secondly, you don't want your child to grow up thinking that fear is childish or silly. Adults that pretend they have no fear take short cuts down dark alleyways at night.

But we do need to teach our children to temper their fear with reason. Cole will complain that he heard noises late in the night. I remind him that we have two dogs and if a ghost or burglar was going to try to break in (because ghosts have to break in before they can haunt your house - you might not have known this) the dogs would start barking and we hear that long before we heard the noises. I also remind him that we have cats too, and they like to jump on the counter tops at night to see if I left any dirty dishes behind. That could account for the noises he hears.

Ask Maddie why she thinks clowns are behind the curtain? Why clowns? Why the curtain? Is the air conditioner vent blowing the curtains and making them move? Her imagination might be trying to explain why and inanimate object would move. Ask her how the clowns got into the house? Does she understand that clowns are just people in make up? If she has a fear of clowns you may want to address that fear by having her paint your face to look like a clown. Let her do it so she can see the transformation. Then let her watch as you remove the make up.

And, this might get me yell at, but when it comes to God, don't be too anxious to use him in every lesson with her. She will learn that God is in everything she does and every part of her life. Kids are simple, especially at that age, and when you add too many variables into the lesson it gets confusing. Kids learn best by watching. They watch you go to church and pray. You take them and tell them to do likewise and they learn to do that too.

That said, I'm not a child psychologist or a theologian. So I could certainly be wrong.

Anyway, I've rambled on too long. Good luck with the clown fears.

Hi Stacey
I tried leaving two messages today on your Temple Transformation blog. After great difficulty, I finally got them posted; however, seconds after they were posted, they disappeared.

Just wondered if I was doing something wrong. It confirmed that they were posted, but they soon disappeared.

I've just checked again (10:41pm Eastern time) and they're still not showing.

Thanks for your kind and helpful words. I know God has a plan in all of this.... and part of that plan is teaching Momma some patience!!!! I just wish He'd hurry up. hahahha.
